Best Places to Visit in Sardinia Italy: When my friends and I decided to visit Italy, Sardinia stood out from the usual choices of Rome, Florence, or Venice. We wanted something different—a mix of pristine beaches, rugged landscapes, and ancient history. The idea of exploring Sardinia’s natural beauty and vibrant culture was too tempting to resist.
I experienced a surge of enthusiasm upon reaching Cagliari Airport and exiting the aircraft into the balmy Mediterranean atmosphere. After renting a car at the airport, we were eager to travel across gorgeous mountains, little towns, and meandering coastal roads. Sardinia had us thrilled to see every nook and cranny, ancient ruin, and busy town the island has to offer with its special mix of adventure and history.
1. Costa Smeralda: Sardinia’s Coast’s Jewel
The glitzy coast of Sardinia, Costa Smeralda, was our first stop. As we traveled the picturesque roads, the turquoise waters gleamed in the sunlight. Spiaggia del Principe was our first destination; it was an unbelievably gorgeous beach. It felt like walking into a postcard when swimming in the glistening pure water.
In the heart of the Costa Smeralda, at Porto Cervo, we had aperitivi while watching luxurious yachts dock. A friendly bartender suggested that we visit Liscia Ruja Beach for a more relaxed vibe where the sophistication gave way to pure, raw beauty. The combination of private coves and expensive resorts was ideal.
2. The Maddalena Archipelago: An Island Haven
We departed on a boat tour to the La Maddalena Archipelago early the following morning. The islands we visited felt even more immaculate than the last as the boat sailed through serene, blue waters.
We were in awe at the renowned Spiaggia Rosa (Pink Beach) on Budelli Island. Even though it was protected, it was fascinating to observe its distinct color from a distance. We anchored close to Caprera Island later on so we could go diving. I experienced a profound sense of serenity and connectedness to nature while we floated in the shallow waves. The trip was enhanced by our boat captain’s historical stories about the islands.
3. Alghero: A Catalan-Charm Rich Town
We arrived at Alghero, a popular beach resort rich in Catalan history. As we strolled along the small cobblestone roads, we felt as though we had gone back in time. The little stores and cafes added to the town’s lively atmosphere, and Bastioni Marco Polo offered broad views of the water.
We ate dinner at a small fish-only restaurant beside the water. Our server regaled us with stories about his childhood in Alghero and the impact the Catalans had on the city. As the sun set past the ancient city walls, we drank locally produced wine and realized how much the beauty of this location had captivated us.
4. Sardinia’s Wild Side: The Supramonte Mountains and Gola di Gorropu
Seeking a change of landscape, we headed into the wild Supramonte Mountains. The landscape seemed pure and solitary, so it was an opportunity for us to reconnect with nature. Our goal was hiking to Gola di Gorropu, sometimes known as Europe’s Grand Canyon.
Though demanding, the hike was well worth it. Deeper into the gorge, we were astounded by how lovely it grew. We once simply sat there in peace, appreciating the height of the rocks. Along the road, we came along an area shepherd who shared with us tales of mountain life. It helped us to appreciate the island even more and let us understand how lovely it is actually.
5. Cagliari: The Capital’s Mix of Old and New
We were amazed by how old and new things mixed in Cagliari, the city of Sardinia. There were small streets with great views of the sea in the Castello District, and Piazza Yenne was always busy.
We talked to local sellers at San Benedetto Market and tried cheeses and cured meats. A seller told us about a cute little café nearby, where we could get cappuccinos and pastries and watch the city come to life. You could feel the past in Cagliari through the Bastione di Saint Remy and the Cagliari Cathedral.
6. Bosa: A Rainbow-Colored Gem in the River
Driving to Bosa seemed like entering a fantastic tale. The town’s brilliantly coloured houses lining the Temo River created a picture-perfect backdrop. The calm atmosphere inspired us to want to stroll beside the riverbed.
At Malaspina Castle, we felt as though we had travelled back in time. Excellent views from the top, and a Bosa craftsman we encountered within the castle informed us about the local way of life. As the day drew to an end, we were delighted to be drinking a glass of Malvasia wine beside the river.
7. Nuraghe Su Nuraxi: Taking a Walk Through Sardinia’s Past
The Nuraghe Su Nuraxi, an old stone maze that amazed us, was our next stop. As we walked through the ruins, we felt like we were linked to a people who lived a very long time ago.
The past of the Nuragic people was brought to life by a knowledgeable guide who also explained what these strange structures meant. As we looked around the place, we learned more about Sardinia’s unique history.
8. Orgosolo: Wall Paintings and Mountain Customs
We found a town called Orgosolo that was full of murals. Each one told a story of defiance and tradition. The streets were like an open-air art gallery to walk through.
We talked to a neighborhood artist who told us what some of the murals meant. Later, we went to a small party with locals and got to know Sardinia’s mountain traditions directly. We will always remember Orgosolo’s rebellious attitude and deeply rooted culture.
9. Cala Gonone: A Dream Spot for Beach Lovers (Best Places to Visit in Sardinia Italy)
Cala Gonone, on Sardinia’s coast, has some of the most stunning beaches. We took a boat cruise to Cala Luna and Cala Mariolu, two remote beaches with crystal-clear waters.
Even though we were just lounging on the beach, a fisherman stopped by and told us stories about the water. We felt like we’d discovered a secret paradise on these beaches since they were so tranquil.
10. Villasimius: A Getaway on the Coast in Southern Sardinia
Villasimius was our last stop. It is a cute town with beaches made of white sand and clear blue water. We lounged on Spiaggia di Simius all day and enjoyed the warm breeze from the Mediterranean.
Tonight we ate in a neighboring trattoria. The owner smiled and presented us wonderful fish, making us feel like family. A boat journey to Capo Carbonara and the port of Stagno di Notteri was the ideal way to finish our trip to Sardinia.
